So basically, hemp is my ideal friend! But can hemp redeem its image? Many think that it can. And the environmental benefits of hemp cultivation, combined with its durable characteristics as a fabric, have many hoping that it can feature in clothing that both feels and looks great, by even the highest of standards pun intended.
Hemp actually has a very long history of being used as a fibre, in fact, it has been cultivated for thousands of years and on almost every continent. The fabric has various natural advantages such as keeping you warm in winter, cool in summer and even protecting you from UV rays.
The fibre produced from pure hemp is similar to linen in texture. It can also be blended with other natural fibres to create fabrics with the durability of hemp and the softness of cotton or bamboo. But why all the fuss about the little green leaf? Is it really any different to other natural fibres? A densely growing plant, hemp literally chokes out any competing plants. Hemp also naturally reduces pests, so no pesticides are needed.
Hemp also requires a relatively small amount of land to cultivate. According to the Guide to Sustainable Textiles , this means it can produce up to double the fibre yield per hectare than cotton.
So from an environmental perspective, the benefits of hemp are pretty clear. But how does it compare once we start processing the raw product into a fabric? Hemp fabric is made from the long strands of fibre that make up the stalk of the plant. The various stages of this process can be done organically through a mechanical process that requires no chemicals.
However, many companies now produce hemp fabric chemically, in a process that is much more intensive on the environment, but faster and cheaper to create. Once the fabric has been created, it may be dyed, which again can result in various environmental outcomes, depending on the technique used. So the production phase is a bit less clear-cut.
Although hemp is a sustainable crop to grow, we still need to be sure that the process being used to turn the plant into a fabric is low-impact. Producers have a responsibility to ensure their manufacturing process considers the environment, their workers and the consumers, along with profitability. The good news is that hemp constitutes a highly sustainable, low-impact crop that can be converted into fabric sustainably. Wondering where to start looking?

A natural fibre may be further defined as an agglomeration of cells in which the diameter is negligible in comparison with the length. Although nature abounds in fibrous materials, especially cellulosic types such as cotton , wood , grains, and straw , only a small number can be used for textile products or other industrial purposes. Apart from economic considerations, the usefulness of a fibre for commercial purposes is determined by such properties as length, strength, pliability, elasticity, abrasion resistance, absorbency, and various surface properties.

Cotton has high maintenance costs, requires pesticides to thrive, dominates agricultural systems that include it, and leaves soil depleted of nutrients, so why is such a damaging crop seen to be the only natural fibre in the textile market? Over the past century there has been so much research around the cotton plant that it still remains the first choice in fibre production. However, with the risk of demand outweighing supply, the cracks are beginning to show. No other natural fibre has ever been seen as an alternative to the 'white gold' that is cotton.
It is the cheapest vegetable fibre procured from the bast or skin of the plant's stem and the second most important vegetable fibre after cotton, in terms of usage, global consumption, production, and availability. It has high tensile strength, low extensibility, and ensures better breath ability of fabrics. It is one of the most versatile natural fibres that has been used in raw materials for packaging, textiles, non-textile, construction, and agricultural sectors.

Ramie fibre comes under bast fibre category, which can be classified as underutilised fibres. The high potential of ramie fibre is not fully exploited due to various techno-economic reasons. It is one of the strongest natural fibres having rich cellulose content. Apart from textile uses, ramie fibre can be utilised for the production of various diversified products. Still in present scenario, there is much scope for research and development on this valuable fibre. Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It is produced primarily from plants in the genus Corchorus , which was once classified with the family Tiliaceae , and more recently with Malvaceae. The primary source of the fiber is Corchorus olitorius , but it is considered inferior to Corchorus capsularis. Jute is one of the most affordable natural fibers , and second only to cotton in the amount produced and variety of uses. Jute fibers are composed primarily of the plant materials cellulose and lignin. It falls into the bast fiber category fiber collected from bast, the phloem of the plant, sometimes called the "skin" along with kenaf , industrial hemp , flax linen , ramie , etc. The industrial term for jute fiber is raw jute.
